About Us
M
& M Worms was founded 26 years ago by Mary Waldron who set
out to grow worms for composting; during this trial work she
discovered a particular worm, which was almost identical to
the common brandling or tiger worm. A species called Dendrobena
Veneta.
After much research (The Internet was just
born about this time, and computers were not household items
) it was found this worm was being bred as fishing bait albeit
in a small way, Mary decided this was a worm that could be beneficial
to both markets, fishing bait and composting.
Let us explain a little about the Dendrobena Worm. These worms
are basically a woodland worm, living in the top two-three inches
of litter; they derive their food from animal droppings and
rotting vegetation. The worms do not actually obtain their nutrition
from animal droppings or rotting vegetation, but from the micro-orgasms,
fungi and bacteria that Mother Nature puts there to break down
this organic matter.
Worms have no teeth (or a knife and fork!!)
They ingest participle or wet matter, which then passes through
the gizzard, where any large lumps are ground down, this then
passes into the stomach, from where the worm obtains its nutrition,
then out the rear. No material takes longer than two hours to
pass through a worm. The faeces of a worm (commonly called worm
casts) are a water soluble plant food, containing nitrogen,
phosphate and potash. and are much sought after by gardeners
especially organic ones.
In 1996 Mary’s husband Michael was seconded into the business
(If you can’t beat them…….Join them). We were
approached by The Open University to supply worms for composting
experiments, which has led us to being involved in large scale
composting and commercial worm growing trials. Mike has been
acknowledged in papers and reports for his work by the university
and The Worm Research Centre.
As with any livestock venture cross breeding is crucial to the
wellbeing of the species, We a M & M Worms source fresh
breeding stock from a large number of suppliers each year, these
worms are D.N.A. tested to ensure no inbreeding occurs, thus
ensuring you the customer of the very best hybrid disease free
worms.
All our worms are bred and reared indoors in controlled environmental
conditions, and are 99.9% pure Dendrobena worms. Fed on pure
organic material enhanced with prozota bacteria to ensure exactly
their nutritional needs are met.
Ours are not the cheapest worms available on the net, but they
are probably the best, and with a little care will last for
over three months if you do not use them all at once.
