| DO'S
1. Do make sure your worm box is big enough if you are keeping
more than 0.5kg of worms. A plastic box 24”x 18”
x 12 “deep will keep 2 kg of worms for months.
2. Do make sure the top has a tight fitting lid, or a 40watt
light on during the hours of darkness, (USE ONLY ENEGERY SAVING
BULBS!) WORMS ARE NOMADIC BY NATURE, AND WILL ESCAPE IN THE
DARK.
3. Do make sure you put in at least 6” of bedding, moss
peat mixed with shredded paper/cardboard. Moisten with rainwater
(most important.)
DONTS.
1. Don’t over water; bedding should be moist not wet.
2. Don’t overfeed, only feed when previous feed has
disappeared, use any kitchen waste, BUT NOT DAIRY PRODUCTS,
COOKING OILS, CITRUS FRUITS (these contain a chemical which
could kill your worms ) chop into small pieces and spread
1” thick over the bedding, use the wife’s liquidizer,
but only when its safe , bingo night is favourite. If you
are unsure just use plain mashed potato.
3. Don’t use tap water, it contains chlorine, it will
kill the bacteria worms need for their nutrition, IF YOU CANT
GET RAINWATER, FILL A BUCKET WITH TAP WATER AND LET IT STAND
OUTDOORS FOR 48 HOURS, THE CHLORINE WILL EVAPORATE, ITS THEN
SAFE TO USE.
4. Don’t keep disturbing the worms to see if they are
O.K. You will upset the fragile eco-system. To remove worms
for your fishing trip, gently move the top layer from one
half of the box onto the other half ,most of the worms will
be in the top 2-3 inches, then reverse the process to collect
from the other half. When you have enough worms, gently level
the surface again, Job Done.
